Gray is the New Black

Who knew that gray would come back into style - and with a vengeance? Remember when people used to paint their houses gray and white in the early 1990's? We're doing it again. And I'm buying as much gray material as possible apparently. I made these three canopies for our shop and then realized they're all gray. Plus, there's one more I made for the display/sample for the darling quilt shop I work at. You see, they're kind enough to carry our patterns (which you can also buy in our shop), and they fly off the shelves if there's a sample of the perfect design sitting next to the patterns.

Secretly, this canopy makes me want to go back to Hawaii and golf at Kapalua Bay. Anyone else?

p.s. No snickering about my nasty grass. It's January 4th here in Utah, and there's no snow. Totally gross.

Feeling Black & White

I got the name of the Riley Blake fabric I used wrong when I put this in the shop. I'm not going to change it, though, because it's Alphabet Soup Girl and I don't think this is "girl" fabric. Ha! I'm in charge. :)

Amy Butler's new-ish fabric, Soul Blossoms, is kind of a mystery to me. I love some of it and I feel nothing about some of it. These two fabrics are some that I love, but didn't know what to do with. Cutting it too much (for a quilt) seemed sacrilegious to me, so a car seat blanket is perfect.

Eek! I love that I positioned the monkey right in the middle of the handle. It makes it appear as though the monkey is riding the handle. Bahaha!

When I didn't buy enough blue minky for a quilt I'm making, but it was enough for a car seat blanket, I thought it was serendipitous. That's right! I just used a $5 word. This one is going to be familiar. Not to worry, it's the last of this Michael Miller fabric. I'm not going to drive two hours round trip to get any more of it.

I thought my love affair with Michael Miller's "Plain Jane" fabric had ended because I couldn't find it at any of my usual fabric store haunts. In fact, I had only seen the giant daisies in one store ever. I happened to be at that far away store and noticed they had a little bit of the black and red left. Irresistible. So here is the last one. For real:

OK - maybe it's not the last one. I might have enough of the navy and yellow giant daisy (this store was hiding it, I'm sure of it) to make one of those...

One of the first car seat blankets I made was with the blue version of this sweet toy parade. The color is so gentle and "baby" and lovely, but it doesn't photograph well. At least I don't photograph it well.

Just trust me - especially with the minky, this one is delicious.

Cowboy and Cotton Blossoms

Now that the weather is cooler, we're back in the mood for minky. This first one was a special order - her main request was cow fabric to match the interior of her car seat. I knew I'd seen it everywhere, so I told her it was no problem. Before I went to every store I know of and found out that everyone loves them some cow fabric. BAH. Luckily it was very easy to find online - that just meant an extra week or two to get the order out.

The next one is more of Moda's Cotton Blossoms, this time in red. Kristi made a pink one and it was so beautiful that it didn't last in the etsy shop for very long. This one also has minky on the inside. Very snuggly.

Popular Plain Jane

If I had known many many months ago that the navy, yellow, and white daisy fabric of Michael Miller's Plain Jane line was going to be so popular, I would have bought a lot more of it. Instead, I had to scour the land for some of the small daisies (the big daisy print is long gone). This was a custom order - different because I used minky on the back. (Somehow we've kept our promise that every blanket is unique!)

I went to The Quilting Cottage for something completely unrelated, and ended up with this fabric in stead. I had to get some and make this car seat blanket out of it. Again, I was sad for a nano-second that my baby isn't a girl. So many cute fabric choices out there for girls! This one is Moda's new line, "Bliss." And, yes, the bottom is that yummy paisley minky. I look forward to making more minky car seat blankets soon now that the weather is turning colder. So cuddle-y and warm!

Feeling Fancy

My four year-old daughter is really getting into Fancy Nancy lately. These last two car seat blankets seem a little fancy to me, too. I'm easily influenced, apparently. :)

And this one is especially French and classic. Everything but the color is very Fancy Nancy.

I really like the black and white car seat blankets. Perfect for baby to focus on and so many other colors will work with it.

Sometime last year I was crying about no cute argyle in the quilt shops. I'm going to take full credit that there is now cute argyle fabric in the quilt shops. Ha!

A custom order for a very loyal customer. She asked for something with "brown and orange" for a girl. Can't get much closer than this beautiful fabric, eh?

This Hooty Hoot fabric from Riley Blake is my favorite thing I've seen in the fabric stores lately. If I had a baby boy right now, this would totally be the car seat blanket I'd want. Gingham is delicious.

Kangaroos!

Can't Resist the Love

I've been jonesing for more of Amy Butler's "Love" fabric. I really wanted that navy blue bouquet stuff, but I couldn't find it. I did find the same fabric in plum, which is just as good. This car seat blanket is one that I would totally use if I had a baby girl right now.

I mixed "Love" with some Riley Blake fabric even though the blues weren't a perfect match. Doesn't it remind you of dandelions?

Daisies Are Back!

Several months ago I found Michael Miller's fabric with the adorable daisies on it and I bought it in two colors. It was that cute. Then I went to a really great quilt shop that is too far away and found a version of that fabric with GIANT flowers on it in navy and yellow. Irresistible! Of course all of those car seat blankets have been purchased, but I recently found the navy and yellow in the small version of the daisies. I love navy blue and yellow together!

I think I've mentioned a few hundred times that boy fabric is kind of hard to come by. I've had this animal print for ages and I didn't like the underside fabric I bought with it. Since we've got an Artisan Fair coming up, I decided to just make everything I have fabric for. I found a blue dot that I bought for another reason, also a long time ago, and now these two fabrics are together at last!

The fabric I bought to go with this originally is orange with orange-er dots. It hurt my eyes when I put them together. The store must have been dark.

A Custom Order

I've had neighbors come to my home and "shop" for a car seat blanket many times and they usually find one they like. Last week a friend couldn't find the perfect one in our inventory, so she went to the fabric store herself and brought fabric back to me. She wanted a car seat cover that was minky on the inside, see. When this friend had her twins more than a year ago, we gave her two car seat blankets and they both had minky on the under-side. When the twins got to be too big for the little car seat, this friend put the car seat cover, minky side up, in their swings. The elastic on the end held the blanket in place and the minky put the babies to sleep every time. Genius!

It's been very exciting having our pattern in the shop. So exciting that I forgot that I'm still making car seat blankets for the people who don't feel like making one for themselves. That's cool, man. :)

Wheelies, Plain Jane, and BIG NEWS

I wasn't even going to buy fabric yesterday, but two things were so irresistible that I not only bought fabric yesterday, I made two car seat covers this morning! Love feeling inspired.

First, Riley Blake's new Wheelies line in flannel - very soft and one of my favorite boy colors, orange:
The other is Michael Miller's Plain Jane fabric in black, red, and white. My sister, Katy, should probably not see this because she'll want to have another baby tomorrow. It's so her! This fabric is called "Snorkel." Isn't that fun?! I love the colors (it's reversible) and the print. Yay!

I loved this damask - the gray is so pretty and delicate. I couldn't find anything I loved to go with it, though. The brown with the flowers is part of the same line of fabric, so I took it. My favorite is being surprised by the other side of the blanket, and this one is definitely surprising and delightful.

I wanted to finish one more car seat blanket this year and this was the perfect one to end on. As soon as I noticed the damask on this perfect pink fabric was sparkly, I bought it. I had no plan - nothing for the under side. It didn't matter. It is so princess-y! My little girl wants to touch it and be near it.
Of course it's still just normal fabric and you can wash it like any other cotton. The other side is a pink stripe minky that I've had for a while. Having one side be so soft and the other side so beautiful makes the whole thing very delicious.

Even though I have two really cute girl car seat blankets to make (one has sparkles - I can't stand it!), I'm still keeping with my goal of making more boy blankets.

First, some of Heather Bailey's new fabric in boy colors. Yes, yellow is a boy color. I didn't used to think so, but starting now, it is.

I also did a car seat cover with alphabet fabric. Just think! If you have an older brother/sister they can learn their ABC's looking at your new baby's car seat blanket! Win-win.

After finishing this car seat blanket I was bitter for about five seconds that I am having a boy and not a girl. I want this one for myself! I think it's so sweet. The pattern reminds me of my sweet Grandma Nellie - soft pinks and floral, and very feminine. Somebody please buy this one before I get too sad that I cannot put this one on my own car seat. :)

I recently took a trip to the fabric store and only bought fabric for boy car seat blankets. It was hard. Not because I don't like boy colors or boys in general, there is just not much to choose from. What the heck, fabric designers? Throw me a bone.

So I bought some bug fabric I've used before and paired it with a cool blue flannel:

(My back drop for the next few months will be my dirty patio. Enjoy.)

Then I found this awesome fabric for someone who is having a real boy and needs the world to know it.

How fun is that?! Both sides of that one are flannel - nice and soft. If you're into that. :)

White Elephant

It's true I've used Michael Miller's animals fabric before (above - back when my grass looked awesome), but I think I've complained about the lack of baby boy-looking fabric enough that it makes it okay for me to use it again. Last time I used the blue dots on brown for the other side. This time it's the turquoise dots on brown. See? Different. Also, the animals are facing north and south instead of east and west. But you noticed that. :)

Finally some time off to sew (something other than the quilt I'm working on, I mean)! Here is another Amy Butler Love car seat blanket. I promise the next five or six car seat blankets that I make will be for boys. At least the next two. :)
My grass is so ugly right now! Add the fact that it gets dark at 4:30 and that equals I need to find a new place to photograph these things. Sigh.

I'm slowly getting rid of my stash of fabric for car seat covers (and adding to my other stash of scraps and whatever for quilts). Here are three from the last week or so. I haven't fallen in love with boy fabric for a while, so I'm doing dots for boys. Anyone seen anything new for boys? I'm on a fabric fast (except for custom orders - throw me a bone, people) during the month of November. What am I missing out on?

Amy Butler's Memento in navy blue and Sunspots in wine. I really like this one.

Can't believe I haven't already made this already, what with my love of Moda Dottie fabric and need for boy car seat covers. This isn't a great photo - it's very cuddly in real life.

The One Left Behind

In my marathon of making car seat blankets for the boutique, there was one that didn't get made. I'm kind of glad, because a friend of mine bought it the other day and it will be perfect for her sister-in-law. The sister-in-law is having her 4th girl in a few weeks. We're thinking she might be done with pink. :)

(First time using my sewing room/office to take the picture. I'm kind of happy about the result. Maybe I won't have to go all the way upstairs and outside for the photo shoots anymore.)

Boutique Success

Saturday October 10th we had our first boutique. The morning was very cold, so the crowds were thin. I wish I could say it warmed up, but the wind was so bitter!

The good news is we sold some fun blankets from our inventory. The better news for you is that we have a bunch of car seat blankets left over to put up in The Butterfly Net Shop. Last Ones... For Real This Time

This is it! These are the last ones I'm making before tomorrow. I should have been done earlier, but as I was leaving the fabric store with my no-good-ivory-thread (unbeknown to me at the time), I saw the new Amy Butler fabric near the door. Who? What? What?! Of course I bought some. Later on that. Here are the boy car seat blankets:

This is as close as I've been to making the same cover twice. The difference is this one is reversible and I made the chocolate on blue the "wrap around" this time. Hmmm. Looks the same.

Vintage style cowboys & cowgirls at a rodeo. Why do I always have a cowboy one?

And now, the one that stopped me in my tracks when I was so close to being done. I love these colors, but I never would have put them together. Amy Butler is a genius! If my sister, Allyn, was having a baby girl, this would be her's. And I would insist that she do all her baby stuff in this color. I'm in charge like that.

Fun Stuff for the Boutique

We've been sewing like crazy the last few days getting ready for the Tuscany Neighborhood Boutique on Saturday, October 10th (THIS SATURDAY - BAH!). We won't be putting these in the shop until after the boutique, if they don't sell. We also have great "babysitter" bags to go with some of these car seat blankets. And trick-or-treat bags! I'm not totally over Riley Blake (there's one on deck right now), but I'm really liking Patricia Bravo's Girly Girl line. The colors are fun, the patterns are interesting. The names she's given them, however, are kind of lame. Seriously... "Dangling Ovals"? I don't think so.
I'd like to make an argument for orange. It's not the new pink or anything, but it's a happy color. Give it a chance, coach!

First Boutique

We're going to be at the Tuscany Neighborhood Boutique on October 10th! Once we decided to do it, we both knew we would need to sew a lot for the next few weeks. Here are the two I finished yesterday.
Lime green is just a cool color and the black made it pretty dramatic. This one is reversible.

Here is a close up of the handle of the Zoo Animals and Gum Ball Dots car seat blanket I did yesterday. Also reversible.

My cousin-in-law Kelly's sister is having her first baby - a boy! Kelly saw the Green Paisley Car Seat Blanket we did for someone else and asked me to do one like it for her sister. I found this darling fabric and had to do some super-soft minky on the back for it. Baby coming didn't cooperate during the ultrasound, so gender-neutral is the key - did I succeed?

I love the 1930s and 1940s prints that have made their way back into the fabric stores. They remind me of my Grandma's house - the kind of dolls she had there (my Mom's dolls) and the books. I walked around the fabric store with Michael Miller's vintage style "Roller Coaster" (one word?) for a good fifteen minutes before I bought some. Couldn't decide if I would be the only person who would like it. Am I? Anyway, I thought the end result was really sweet.

Yes, I made another car seat blanket out of Riley Blake fabric. This time it's the slate blue with ivory and chocolate brown. And it's reversible! Now you know what happens when I find cute boy fabric - I buy it all. More photos in the shop. One For A Girl, One For A Fan

It's been a long time since I've done a fan car seat blanket. Tanya ordered one from our etsy shop and by the time I found the fabric (online - no Washington Redskins fans here in Utah, apparently) she'd had her baby! Booo. I found some polyester fabric for the back that feels like a lightweight suede. Which is kind of cool.

The other one is a sweet girly car seat blanket made with Heather Bailey's Pop Garden in teal and pink. I used pink dot minky for the back. I could see the sun going down out my window as I finished this one up. I didn't even clip all the threads before rushing outside to take a picture of it. The sunset was so pink and the light on the blanket was beautiful in real life. It looked really really bright on my computer screen, though. Trust me, it's just normal pink, not spazzy pink.

Time For Something Sweet

It seems like I've made a lot of boy stuff lately. Maybe that's why this lovely fabric called my name when I was on one of my thrice weekly pilgrimages to a fabric store. I think the flowered side is so feminine. And until someone (SOMEONE PLEASE) starts making argyle fabric (CUTE argyle fabric), the lavender plaid on the reverse side will have to do it for me. We have some friends who are serious triathletes - they even have their own store! The wife half of this couple is amazing. She just had their fifth child a few weeks ago. It's a little late and a little bit literal (L, L, L), but I thought of them when I saw flannel with bicycles (ignore the scooters) and then matching flannel with waves. Hee! GET IT?! I couldn't find any fabric with shoes or runners. Sad. Still, they're lucky to have a friend like me. :)

We have a beautiful friend named Shannon who is very smart, funny and talented as well. Her one flaw is being a closet cowgirl. Since she's having a boy in a few weeks (and naming him after a character from Lonesome Dove - hee!), I thought using some cowboy handkerchief fabric would be appropriate. The outside of this bag is my favorite fabric ever. The inside is yellow minky. Because it is. Maybe your hands are going to get cold in the car one day while you're driving junior to the babysitter's house. Keep one hand on the wheel and put the other one in the bag! Like a muff. Blue With Leaves

I still love doing cotton and minky car seat blankets. They're the perfect weight for those cooler days coming up. My son was born last fall and I made him one with minky on it and it was perfect.
